Thursday, November 27

This is the ad that will appear in the Globe and Mail. Eek an ad. Which means an audience. Eek. But the ad is nebulous enough. I like the words. The show is kind of all about the difference between the “this” and the “next”. The space between. We threw out a major concept today because it was too constricting. Which means the set might go to. Well that’s the process. We were having problems because we had chosen an event - or “story” - that was outside the performance entirely. Really what Brooks and I do together is create performance that is an event in itself. So we’ve come back to a notion of an event (the performance) about an event (the story). The story remains but it is not the engine of the piece. The engine is the performance itself. Then of course emerges a whole new series of questions. The first and largest of which is “why?”. Ah theatre, an endless succession of whys.

I’m sure the pain and worry will be worth it. Looking forward to seeing you onstage again. cheers, Ann

Just saw a production of House here in Saint John. Nasty Shadows Theatre Company. They did quite a good job (despite a lousy space), and the audience enjoyed itself. And last night I read a section from near the end of Here Lies Henry to my ‘reading group’ (I was in charge of the night: I chose ‘Heaven and Hell’ as my subject). They loved it. So I’ve had a very MacIvor couple of days.
