Linda on Stage

Opened the show in Antigonish.  It’s such an interesting conundrum this process.  Pure storytelling that wants a feeling of absolute spontenaity and yet it’s become a set text.  How to make those things work together.  My feeling is that the more Linda does the show the less it will feel like a text to her.  It’s about the familiarity.  The opening went very well.  Linda had a feeling of immediacy that was great.  One of the main problems is rehearsing the show.  To do it without an audience is just to bring attention to it being “written”.   Once there is an audience it feels less artificial.  We’ve had an ongoing conversation about “artifice”.   What is artificial in the theatre, what isn’t, or is it all?   Pehaps the audience is the only thing not artificial.  And yet are their expectations a kind of artifice?

I’m in Halifax now staying with my friend John H.  Today I have to put together the rewrites for “His Greatness” for the NY Fringe production that starts rehearsing on Monday.  Tomorrow I travel to Mill Lake where I’m renting Kat’s cabin for the month.  Just me and a boat and a cabin and the lake.  There’s no internet access - a problem I’ve come upon often in my travels of late.  I’ll post when I can.
